Sharing Personal Information

We share your Personal Information with service providers who help us run our store and fulfill your orders. For example:

  • We use Shopify to power our online store. You can read more about how Shopify uses your Personal Information here: https://www.shopify.com/legal/privacy.
  • We share your name, shipping address and order details with our fulfillment and shipping partners so they can prepare and deliver your order.
  • We may share your Personal Information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, to respond to a subpoena, search warrant or other lawful request for information, or to otherwise protect our rights.

Behavioural Advertising

We use your Personal Information to show you targeted ads and marketing communications we believe may interest you. For example:

  • We use Google Analytics to understand how customers use the Site. You can read how Google uses your Personal Information here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/policies/privacy/, and opt out here: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
  • We use the Meta Pixel and the TikTok Pixel to measure our ads and show you relevant ads on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. These tools share information about your use of the Site, your purchases and your interactions with our ads with those advertising partners, in some cases through cookies or similar technologies (which you may consent to, depending on where you live).

For more on how targeted advertising works, visit the Network Advertising Initiative: https://www.networkadvertising.org/understanding-online-advertising/how-does-it-work.

You can opt out of targeted advertising here:

You can also opt out of some of these services through the Digital Advertising Alliance: https://optout.aboutads.info/.

Using Personal Information

We use your Personal Information to provide our services to you. That includes offering products for sale, processing payments, shipping and fulfilling your order, handling warranty and support requests, and, if you’ve opted in, keeping you up to date on new products and offers. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time using the link at the bottom of any message.

Lawful Basis (EEA and UK Residents)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), if you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your Personal Information on the following lawful bases:

  • your consent;
  • the performance of the contract between you and the Site;
  • compliance with our legal obligations;
  • our legitimate interests, which do not override your fundamental rights and freedoms.

Retention

When you place an order through the Site, we keep your Personal Information for our records unless and until you ask us to erase it, except where we must keep it longer for tax, accounting or legal reasons. For more on your right to erasure, see “Your Rights” below.

Automatic Decision-Making

If you live in the EEA, you have the right to object to processing based solely on automated decision-making (including profiling) when that decision has a legal effect on you or otherwise significantly affects you.

We do not engage in fully automated decision-making that has a legal or otherwise significant effect using customer data.

Our processor Shopify uses limited automated decision-making to prevent fraud, which does not have a legal or otherwise significant effect on you. This includes:

  • temporarily blocking IP addresses associated with repeated failed transactions, for a small number of hours;
  • temporarily blocking credit cards associated with blocked IP addresses, for a small number of days.

Your Rights

Canada: under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you have the right to access the Personal Information we hold about you, to ask us to correct it, and to withdraw your consent to its use, subject to legal or contractual restrictions.

EEA and UK (GDPR): you have the right to access the Personal Information we hold about you, to move it to another service, and to ask that it be corrected, updated or erased. Your Personal Information may be processed in Ireland and then transferred outside Europe for storage and further processing, including to Canada and the United States. For more on how these transfers comply with the GDPR, see Shopify’s GDPR resources: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/privacy/GDPR.

California (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know what Personal Information we hold about you, to move it to another service, and to ask that it be corrected or deleted. We do not sell your Personal Information for money. However, the use of advertising pixels (such as Meta and TikTok) may count as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising under California law. You can opt out of this sharing at any time by contacting us, or by enabling the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in your browser. You may also designate an authorized agent to make requests on your behalf by contacting us.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at fivestaradvent@gmail.com. We will respond within the time required by applicable law.

Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of information downloaded to your computer or device when you visit our Site. We use functional, performance, advertising and social media cookies. Cookies improve your browsing by letting the Site remember your actions and preferences, such as your cart and region, and they help us understand how visitors use the Site.

Cookies necessary for the store to function include cookies used for your shopping cart, checkout, login and privacy settings, for example: cart, cart_currency, cart_sig, checkout, checkout_token, secure_customer_sig, _secure_session_id, _shopify_country and _tracking_consent. They last from a single session up to two years.

Reporting and analytics cookies help us understand how the Site is used, for example: _landing_page, _orig_referrer, _shopify_s, _shopify_y, _shopify_sa_p, _shopify_sa_t and _y. They last from 30 minutes up to one year.

Advertising cookies are set by our advertising partners (Meta, TikTok and Google) to measure and personalize ads.

For Shopify’s full and current list of storefront cookies, see https://www.shopify.com/legal/cookies.

Session cookies last until you stop browsing, and persistent cookies last until they expire or are deleted. Most of the cookies we use expire between 30 minutes and two years after they’re set.

You can control and manage cookies through your browser settings, usually found under “Tools” or “Preferences”. For more on how to block, manage or filter cookies, visit www.allaboutcookies.org. Blocking cookies may affect how parts of our Site work, and it may not fully stop us from sharing information with advertising partners. To opt out of those uses, follow the steps in the “Behavioural Advertising” section above.

Do Not Track

Because there is no consistent industry standard for responding to “Do Not Track” signals, we do not change our data collection and use practices when we detect one. We do honour Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where required by law.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes to our practices or for other operational, legal or regulatory reasons. The “Last updated” date below shows when it was last revised.

Complaints

If you would like to make a complaint, please contact us by email or mail using the details under “Contact” above.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the relevant data protection authority. In Canada, that’s the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/report-a-concern/. If you live elsewhere, you can contact your local data protection authority.
